Anti-establishment parties on both the right and the left appear to perform strongly in voting for the European Parliament. The far-right Front National is claiming victory in France and the UK Independence Party, which wants to pull Britain out of the EU is on course to do the same.

Elsewhere, anti-austerity parties on the left fared well in Greece. In Germany, Chancellor Angela Merkel’s ruling Christian Democrats defied the protest vote as did Italy’s pro-Europe Democratic Party. Overall, pro-integration parties maintained their control of the European Parliament.

Opposition Flemish party that wants to dissolve Belgium in its current form must come out on top in the country’s parliamentary elections held alongside the European Poll. The new Flemish alliance is on course to be the biggest party in both the Federal and the Flemish Parliaments.
