Ukraine’s president has defended his move to put a historic deal with the EU on hold. That decision has triggered mass protests in a number of cities and the capital, Kiev. Police tear gassed protesters. The jailed opposition leader, Yulia Tymoshenko, has announced an indefinite hunger strike until the deal is signed.
Thailand’s parliament has begun a censure debate after the opposition democrat party submitted a motion of no confidence against the Prime Minister, Yingluck Shinawatra. Earlier she invoked special powers against anti-government demonstrators who forced their way into two ministries in Bangkok.
A mass vaccination program is starting in the Philippines to immunize children affected by typhoon Haiyan. About 33 thousand children have been treated against measles and polio. The World Health Organization will start the campaign in evacuation centers in the areas hardest hit by the typhoon.
