The head of the Ukranian Navy, Denys Berezovsky, has been removed from his post after he pledged allegiance to the pro-Russian authorities in Crimea. Kiev has put him under investigation for treason.
Russia is reported to have deployed more troops in Crimea and says it has the right to defend its interests. Kiev has called up all of its military reservists on full combat readiness. Although Ukraine says it will not fire the first shot.
As pro and anti-Russia protests take place across Europe including in Germany, the chancellor, Angela Merkel, spoke to the Russian President, Mr. Putin, who agreed to establish a fact-finding mission and contact group to start a political dialogue between Russia and Ukraine.
Police in China, one other story, are searching for the attackers who stabbed to death at least 29 people at a train station in the southwest city of Kunming.
