Hello, you’re watching BBC World News. I’m Naga Munchetty. Here are the headlines.
Large parts of the United States are bracing for potentially record low temperatures as a stream of bitterly cold arctic air sweeps across the country. The temperature is already minus 35 degrees in some areas with thick snow blanketing streets and causing travel chaos.
Unofficial election results in Bangladesh put the country’s ruling party way ahead in the polls. At least 18 people died in the election violence after the main opposition party boycotted the vote. Early results show an extremely low voter turnout compared to previous elections.
The president of Sudan, Omar al-Bashir is traveling to South Sudan for talks on the internal conflict in the country. More than a thousand people have lost their lives over three weeks of fighting while peace talks between the government and rebels show little sign of progress.
And the first giant panda cub born in Taiwan has made a much anticipated public debut, drawing thousands of excited fans in the first few hours. Panda mania swept through Taiwan after Yuan Zai was born at Taipei’s zoo in July following a series of artificial insemination attempts.
